Shenzhen City, abbreviated as “Shen,” also known as Pengcheng, is a prefecture-level city, sub-provincial city, and nationally designated independent city in Guangdong Province. As a megacity and the core city of the Shenzhen metropolitan area, it is located in southern Guangdong Province on the eastern shore of the Pearl River Estuary. It borders Daya Bay and Dapeng Bay to the east, the Pearl River Estuary and Lingdingyang to the west, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to the south, and Dongguan City and Huizhou City to the north. The city covers a total area of 1,997.47 square kilometers. As of the end of 2025, the city administers nine districts. Mandarin Chinese serves as the primary language of communication, supplemented by Cantonese and English.

The terrain is predominantly hilly, with a subtropical monsoon climate characterized by long summers, short winters, and abundant rainfall. Shenzhen boasts 7,000 years of human activity and 1,700 years of urban history. Its predecessor was Bao'an County, which belonged to Guangzhou Prefecture's Xin'an County during the Ming and Qing dynasties and was part of Huiyang District before becoming a municipality. The name “Shenzhen” first appeared in historical records in the eighth year of the Yongle reign (1410) of the Ming Dynasty. In March 1979, Bao'an County was renamed Shenzhen City, initially under dual administration by Guangdong Province and Huiyang District before becoming directly administered by Guangdong Province in November. On August 26, 1980, Shenzhen established the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. Shenzhen is one of Guangdong's key overseas Chinese hometowns, an important revolutionary base area, and a founding site of the Dongjiang Column during the War of Resistance Against Japan.

Shenzhen is a Special Economic Zone approved by the State Council, a National Innovation City, a Modern Maritime City, an International Comprehensive Transportation Hub, a National Economic Center, a National Advanced Manufacturing Base, a gateway for opening up to the outside world, a key hub for the International Science and Technology Innovation Center, and a Pilot Demonstration Zone for Socialism with Chinese Characteristics. Shenzhen serves as a window for China's reform and opening-up and an emerging immigrant city. It achieved the globally renowned “Shenzhen Speed” and is hailed as “China's Silicon Valley.” It also functions as a national logistics hub and one of China's three major national financial centers.
